BUS REPORT Spring 2012
I am pleased to begin the year by reporting another momentous environmental milestone. Thomas Built Buses recently was recognized as an Environmental Steward by the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources. The award cites Thomas Built Buses' "superior environmental performance, commitment to continued reduction of its environmental impact and demonstrated commitment to exceed compliance." Thomas Built is now one of only 16 companies in the state of North Carolina to have received this recognition.
It seems only natural that Thomas Built would be named a "steward," since we regard ourselves as stewards of precious cargo, the children who ride our buses to and from school every day. We are stewards, as well, of our customers' budgets, offering a full line of quality products designed to decrease fuel and maintenance costs. And, as noted by the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources, we are good stewards of our environment.
Among the company initiatives that contributed to our receiving this recognition were the integration of environmental management into our core business processes, our history of compliance, our providing land to house a solar panel field, our having decreased water use by 25 percent per bus manufactured and having decreased our total energy use by 10 percent in the last three years. Most notably, Thomas Built Buses was the first, and remains the only, school bus manufacturer to have achieved Zero-Waste-to-Landfill facilities.
We know that how we build is as important as what we build. We have worked hard for this honor, and we're proud of our accomplishment. While we pause for a moment to enjoy the recognition, we're already thinking of the next steps in our ongoing commitment to continuous improvement. This is who we are. It's how we do business.
It is no coincidence that you'll also see in this issue of the BUS REPORT articles about the impressive fuel economy of our Saf-T-Liner® C2 buses, the expansion of our customer service team, and the measurable benefits Daimler Truck Financial brings to our customers. Each of these stories, in its own way, also is an example of our commitment to continuous improvement and good stewardship of our resources and yours.
